The American Association of University Women Records consist of local, state, and national organization materials. The bulk of the materials date from 1930 to 1991. Some materials relating to local branches date back to 1916. Materials include state and local business reports (1930-1989), meeting minutes, AAUW publications (1931-1984), correspondence (1934-1983), histories and yearbooks of local branches (1916-1989), branch newsletters (1970-1991), General Director's Letter (1933-1970), and Bylaws. Within the collection's seven additions, each primarily containing updated records, organization is by subject.

The American Association of University Women was formed in 1881 to promote higher education for women, assist women in their pursuit of various occupations, and help them utilize their education to benefit society and themselves. The North Dakota Division was formed in 1930.
